I learned the 4 Gates of the Wing Chun Gung Fu system from Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto in the late 60’s. The 4 Gates consists of defending strikes from a circular or hook punches or strikes. Punches or strikes coming from a (1) high right or a (2) high left, or a (3) low right or (4) low left strike consists of the 4 Gates. The Wing Chun system also has straight linear punches or strikes, but defenses to these movements are not included in the 4 Gates method. Having boxing experience, and because of my Jeet Kune Do training I added the 5th Gate. This is (5) a straight rear hand punch or a straight front hand jab or punch.
Bruce Lee’s concept of being simple, direct and practical in martial art fighting is a basic rule to understand and constantly strive to implement in one’s training and teaching. Furthermore, simplicity and direct concepts can be offensive or defensive techniques. In a concept of blocking, we don’t use passive blocks in the 4 Gates. Our blocks with one hand (or feet) will be done simultaneously with strikes by the other hand (or feet). In my comments below, I do not try to teach a comprehensive lesson or convey a complete picture. Rather, my intentions are to show what I have found to be effective and what is possible. I do show movement combinations that should take fractions of seconds to do, depending on the movements themselves. It is up to the practitioner to see and understand what the movements are, to choose what to take and if appropriate, what to adapt. The one central principle that should always be applied is physical efficiency of speed and power.
MG 4288: Eric in the right lead attacks with his right straight jab
MG 4289: I parry his front jab with my rear left hand and simultaneously strike with my front right jab. My body is now positioned to support striking with my left hand.
MG 4290: I immediately follow up with my left rear hand cross punch. With my weight on my right foot, and my right hand drawn back next to my chin, I am coiled for a right hook.
MG 4293: Now I uncoil and continue with a front right hand Hook.
MG 4297: A knee kick is after my jab – cross – hook combination
MG 4299: After the knee kick I step back with my left leg for a low front leg hook kick.
MG 4303: Eric in the right lead punches with a straight rear left cross
MG 4304: I parry his left hand with my rear left hand and punch with my right hand in one movement. My left hand is now in a position to strike.
MG 4305: I immediately follow up with a left hammer fist while I draw my right arm back to prepare for the next strike. In drawing back my right arm, I can also grab hold of my opponents arm and pull him to disturb his balance.
MG 4306: I continue with my right hook punch pulling my right hip to my left side for weight power and coiled for follow up with left punch or left kick
MG 4309: I choose to follow with my left knee kick
MG 4311: After the left knee kick I step back with my left leg and execute a low inside leg kick
MG 4312: Eric in the right lead strikes with his left straight cross
MG 4313: I parry his left punch with my left hand and simultaneously punch with my right hand to his face. This similar to the movements in the above scenario.
MG 4314: I immediately strike with my left blade hand to his neck MG 4332
MG 4319: I continue with a right hook to his jaw
MG 4316: Inside range I execute a left knee kick
MG 4317: After stepping back with my left leg, I execute a low right kick to Eric’s right inside leg
MG 4320: Eric in the right lead attacks with his front high right hook
MG 4321: I simultaneously block with my left arm and strike with right punch to his jaw. MG 4327
MG 4322: I continue with a left blade hand to his neck MG 4326
MG 4323: and follow up with a right hook to his face MG 4329
MG 4324: I execute my left knee kick
MG 4325: I complete the combination with a low right kick
MG 4337: Eric in the right lead attacks with a left rear over-hand punch,
MG 4338: I simultaneously parry with my right hand and deliver a straight cross with my left hand. My right hand block is done to position my right hand to deliver a strike.
MG 4339: I continue with a right blade hand to Erics neck
MG 4340: and follow with a left strike to Eric face
MG 4341: and a left knee to Eric’s chest
MG 4342: followed with low right kick to Eric’s inside leg
MG 4350: Eric in a right lead attack with a low right body punch
MG 4351: I block with my left arm and simultaneously punch with my right hand to Eric’s face. In this movement, notice that I twist my body slightly to my left, priming my balance to swing to the right with force.
MG 4352: I continue with my left punch to Eric’s ribs
MG 4353: and follow up with a high right hook to Eric’s jaw
MG 4354: I execute a simple left knee kick
MG 4356: and another simple low right kick
MG 4357: Eric in a right lead attacks with a low rear body hook.
MG 4358: I block with my right arm and simultaneously punch with my left hand to Eric’s face.
MG 4359: I follow up with a low right punch to Eric’s ribs
MG 4360: and continue with a straight right cross to Eric face
MG 4361: a simple knee kick to Eric’s chest
MG 4362: and finish with a low inside kick to Eric’s leg
