The fight 1985 showdown between Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns would later be dubbed “The War.” The very first round (a round in which boxers characteristically “feel each other out” and save their energy for later rounds) would start with both fighters landing devastating power shots. At first it appears that Hagler may be done for as Hearns lands a vicious right. But within seconds Hagler lands a couple of effective lefts and backs Hearns into the ropes.

This vicious fight would end in round 3, with a stoppage by referee Stelle (Hears was up at the count of 9, but out on his feet). This fight is considered to be a subset of the famous 4-way battle between Hagler, Hearns, Leonard and Duran.
